It’s a battle too often waged alone and with heartbreaking results. Hoping to spark a cultural change that will reverse that tragic approach to depression, two Woburn Memorial High School pupils are organizing “Kick It 2019”, the community’s first-ever kickball tournament aimed at increasing suicide awareness.
The COVID-19 crisis has now swept its cancellation boot upon a charity kickball tournament in Woburn, but high school seniors Noah Dhaliwal and Sam Gerry are far from deterred.
The City Council last night heralded a pair Woburn Memorial High School alumni for their steadfast commitment to the cause of suicide prevention.
Samuel Gerry is a 19 year-old student, mental health advocate, and founder of Kick It for a Cause, Inc. He advocates for mental health awareness as well as suicide prevention by sharing his own experiences with psychological disorders and educating those who may not be familiar with mental illness.

When 19-year old Samuel Gerry played for the American Junior Golf Association, he had the opportunity to raise money for a cause that mattered to him. He decided to raise money for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. In doing so, he shared his experiences with depression and suicidal ideation with the world for the first time.
That Sunday felt like a typical Sunday. Sam Gerry, then 14, hit golf balls on a simulator near his home. Later he played Tiger Woods PGA Tour on the Xbox with his dad. It was February in the Boston suburbs, and real golf was still weeks away. But the game was never too far from Sam’s mind.

Sam Gerry was nine years old when his dad bought him his first set of clubs, which he started taking out on the short course near his house in the suburbs of Boston, Massachusetts, a couple of times a week.
